Research Area: Geometric Group Theory, Philosophy and Ethics in Mathematics
Research Bio: As an early career researcher, my current work is quite broad and expositional, but it generally falls into one of two categories.
My current work in geometric group theory has to do with Schubert varieties. These varieties can sometimes be difficult to work with in both the algebraic setting and the 'geometric' setting of the Grassmannian to which it is directly related. However, in certain cases, the cohomology of a Schubert variety can be better understood as a group acting nicely on a euclidean or hyperbolic space. What properties of the variety does this action encode?
I am also pursuing interdisciplinary projects in bringing the tools of modern philosophy and ethics into mathematical discourse. I believe that a healthy and connected math community requires this sort of self-reflection. Though mathematics, and pure mathematics in particular, puts itself in a sheltered position from political and social issues, it cannot escape from being a political and social signifier. What can and must we say from this position?
